Glaciers

This was the longest day at sea, passing from the beagle Channel to the Magellen Straights, in appalling weather, which was great, as up till now the Patagonian tempests seemed to be much exaggerated!

The day was filled with lectures a knot class (pass), a visit to the bridge and lunch – more food!  We reached the Aguila Glacier at about 4pm, the seas still raging such that the ship itself  had to steam away further up the fjord after we all made the bumpy ride to shore safely.  Lots of info from the briefing beforehand and then from our guide on shore; we walked along the beach, turned a corner, then there it was…..

We stayed for about an hour – thank heavens for Gore-tex!! – and gradually the clouds lifted and we were able to see the whole awesome thing.  It may be receding but it’s still very, very impressive!

The journey back to the ship had me more than a tad worried, as the ship couldn’t keep still long enough for us all to board – our photos don’t do the conditions justice, there were waves washing all ove the Zodiac while the Chilean driver sang jolly songs - such as La Marseillaise! – to keep our spirits up, as we were held out at sea till our turn to board.  Ah well, all a laugh now!!

Then a pisco sour as we watched the  presentation on our next exciting expedition at crack of dawn next day, the penguin colony on Magdelena Island,  followed by dinner and bed.
